Here's why kids will walk to book it to the New West library

From the Library

This May and June, drop by the library after school for some fun new programs for school-aged kids.

Along with a new look at the library’s main branch, we also have some brand new spaces and technology that we are eager to share now that we are open again.

Upstairs in our Technology Lab, kids nine to 12 years of age can try a Code Club session, where we will learn basic coding with Scratch and do a small project together. Sign up for either Tuesday, May 7 or Tuesday, May 14. Each session runs from 3:30 to 4:30 p.m.

Kids eight to 11 years of age can also learn to code and play with our new Spheros. We will work together to program these small robots to follow instructions and complete challenges. Fun with Sphero will run every Wednesday in May after school from 3:30 to 4:30 p.m. Pick a day and sign up to join us.

Younger kids six to eight years old can get in on the fun too in our Code-a-pillarprogram. The Code-a-pillar is a fun (and screen-free) way to introduce computational thinking to younger children. We’ll be ready to play and learn every Tuesday in June after school from 3:30 to 4:30 p.m.

Pre-registration is required for all of these new technology programs. Call NWPL’s children and youth desk at 604-527-4677 or visit the children’s and teen department to sign up. There is no cost to attend. Parents and caregivers are welcome to join us.

Wondering what the future holds? You can look forward to the Summer Reading Club, starting on June 3. Kids can keep track of their reading over the summer to earn stickers and other prizes, including the coveted Summer Reading Club medal.

Storytime programs will return to the library in July. Keep an eye on our website at nwpl.ca for dates and times for summer Babytime, Storytime, and other free weekly summer programs for kids, tweens, and teens.
