If Christmas isn't a happy time, this New Westminster service can help

Sparkling lights, glittering decorations and the relentlessly cheerful blare of Christmas songs at every turn.

It’s the kind of enforced jollity that can be jarring at the best of times – and nearly impossible to cope with when things are difficult.

Unity of New Westminster is recognizing how tough the holiday season can be for those who are hurting by offering up a Blue Christmas service on Thursday, Dec. 12 at 7:30 p.m.

“For some people, the Christmas season is not ‘the most wonderful time of the year,’” says a press release about the service. “The joy and gaiety of the festive season may be marred by feelings of sadness, grief and loss.”

The Blue Christmas service is especially for those who are mourning the loss of someone or something – a loved one, a relationship, a career.

“It is for those who feel sad or lonely during this time when everyone else seems to be celebrating,” the release says. “During the service we light candles, hear gentle music, sing Silent Night and gently honour ourselves and our feelings.”

Refreshments will be served afterwards. The service is described as a “sacred secular” service and is open to everyone. For information, call 778-988-5644.
