Comparing history with the New Westminster Historical Society

What's happening Around Town
May Day 1870
Nellie McColl was New Westminster's first May Queen on May Day 1870 - the same year as the first asphalt paving was laid in New Jersey, the death of Charles Dickens and New York's first subway opened. It's among the information you'll learn at this month's New Westminster Historical Society presentation.

The upcoming meeting of the New Westminster Historical Society will consider how New Westminster compared to other places in its early days.

The presentation is on Wednesday, March 20 at 7:30 p.m. in Century House, 620 Eighth St.  The topic of the presentation is: Early New Westminster and Around the World: Comparing History.

An interesting way to explore a city’s story is to compare the particular dates or time periods of a community with equivalent dates and time periods from around the world at the same time. This is often eye-opening, frequently startling, and always entertaining. This is an excellent way to look into a place while keeping the entire story in context,” said a press release about the event. “This program, which was first presented about 40 years ago, will look at points of New Westminster history and compare these with what was going on in other places around the globe. The process of creating such a program, now with the aid of the computer, and then, with a considerable amount of book and paper research, will also be covered.”

Everyone is welcome to attend the free program, and pre-registration isn’t required.
