Prince George man shot and killed by police, IIO investigate

A Prince George man is dead after being shot by police Thursday after RCMP received a report at about 4:44 p.m. of a distraught man who was reportedly in the midst of a mental health crisis at the intersection of Highway 97 and WIllowcale Road.

A Prince George man is dead after being shot by police Thursday after RCMP received a report at about 4:44 p.m. of a distraught man who was reportedly in the midst of a mental health crisis at the intersection of Highway 97 and WIllowcale Road.

A Critical Incident Commander was notified and Emergency Health Services staged nearby while frontline officers contained the scene and stopped all highway traffic.

An interaction occurred between the man and police outside of the vehicle which resulted in the officer firing his weapon. The man was shot and police provided medical attention until Emergency Health Services arrived. 

The man succumbed to his injuries.

 No one else was injured.

The highway remained closed in both directions while the scene was processed and traffic delays continued throughout the night.

The BC RCMP notified the Independent Investigations Office of British Columbia (IIO BC) of the incident.

The IIO BC is investigating police actions in the incident. As the matter is now under investigation by the IIO BC, no further information will be released by police.
