Motorcyclist killed in Highway 14 crash was trying to pass left-turning truck: police

The 56-year old motorcyclist died in the crash near Jordan River on Sunday

Police and the B.C. Coroners Service are investigating the death of a motorcyclist in a collision with a pickup in the Jordan River area early Sunday afternoon.

Island District RCMP Cpl. Alex Bérubé said Sooke RCMP received reports of the collision around 12:40 p.m.

Initial evidence shows the driver of the pickup was heading west on Highway 14 and attempting to make a left turn into a campground when the motorcyclist, who was travelling behind the pickup, attempted to pass into the oncoming lane and collided with the vehicle, said Bérubé.

The 56-year-old motorcyclist died at the scene, he said.

Highway 14 was closed for an hour on Sunday due to the collision. The highway was partially reopened and travel on the roadway resumed normally by 4 p.m., DriveBC said on social media.

About 1.8 kilometres of Highway 14 between Trailhead Drive and the Jordon River recreation site was affected.

Jenny Peng, a spokesperson with the Provincial Health Services Authority, said in a statement that B.C. Emergency Health Services received a call shortly after 12:30 p.m. and went to the scene with two ambulances and an air ambulance, but paramedics “did not transport any patient to the hospital.”
