Seaquam Secondary School in North Delta was put in a 'hold and secure' on Monday afternoon following reports of youths possible engaging in a fight involving weapons.

Delta police remain on scene Monday afternoon (May 26) in the area of Seaquam Secondary in North Delta investigating a possible planned fight between students with possible weapons.

Officers received a report of a possible fight in the area of the school just before 2 p.m.

According to police, five youth males were observed wearing ski masks on school property who fled when observed by school staff.

Shortly afterwards, an officer observed a group of youth in the area. One of the males was seen discarding a weapon before fleeing from police.

“Due to the possibility of a weapon, Seaquam Secondary School and Cougar Canyon Elementary were placed into a hold and secure until police could determine the nature of the incident,” said S/Sgt. Mike Whiteley, media relations officer with Delta police. “The schools have since been released from the hold and secure, and a coordinated release of the students took place.”

Whiteley said a K-9 search of the area located an airsoft pistol in the bushes.

Police remain in the area looking for the youth.

This is the second time in a few days that police and school officials have been involved in investigating possible planned flights between students.

In an email notice to parents from Seaquam Secondary School, a school official said on Saturday night (May 24) that they had received word from Delta police that there may be a number of students from the school who may have planned, or planning to attend, a physical fight later that evening around Delta Secondary School and near the May Days festival grounds in Memorial Park.

The notice also stated that police were already investigating fights that occurred Friday night, and those altercations were recorded on video from their drone.

Police told the Optimist, this fight was centred around a basketball game.

A similar notice was sent out to Delta Secondary School parents as well.

On Saturday evening, Whiteley told the Optimist, that police were taking the same pre-emptive warning they would issue to youths at Halloween and the annual so-called “Hell Night.”

Police stepped up patrols in and around Delta Secondary and the May Days Festival on Saturday night as a precaution.
