Ukrainian league play depicts 1930s genocide

It's been 80 years since Holodomor - the great famine-genocide imposed on the Ukrainian people in 1932-33 by Stalin's regime.

The Ukrainian Catholic Women's League at Holy Eucharist Cathedral in New Westminster is planning to commemorate this event with a one-man play performed by Father Edward Danylo Evanko.

Holodomor - Murder by Starvation will be shown on Saturday, April 6 at 2 p.m. in the theatre of the Justice Institute of British Columbia, at 715 McBride Blvd.

Tickets are $20 for adults, $8 for youth ages 13 to 19, and children get in free.

WILD LIFE SHOW AT THE NETWORK HUB

It's time for some fresh art in the city.

New West artists are hosting a new four-person show called Wild Life at The Network Hub, starting Monday, April 1, with an opening reception on Friday, April 5 from 6 to 8 p.m.

The artists featured in this show are Alicija Draganska, Robert Jost, James Price and Julia Schoennagel.

The Network Hub is located on the second floor of The River Market at 810 Quayside Drive. Hours are Monday to Friday, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

NEW WEST LIT FEST IN APRIL

Book lovers, mark your calendars for April 11.

That's the day New West Lit Fest kicks off for a three-day literature extravaganza.

Lit Fest New West will be held over three days, from Thursday, April 11 to Saturday, April 13, beginning with events at the public library on Thursday and Friday.

On the Saturday, there will be exhibitions and workshops at Douglas College during the day, followed by the Lit Fest Showcase, featuring music, poetry and spoken word performances, in the evening.

New Westminster's own Renée Sarojini Saklikar is this year's Lit Fest resident poet/writer.

All events are free and open to the public.

The New Westminster Public Library is located at 716 Sixth Ave. and Douglas College is located at 700 Royal Ave.

JACK LAYTON BOOK LAUNCH AT SERIES

A special edition of the Poetic Justice poetry reading series will be held next weekend to celebrate the launch of a new book commemorating the life of federal NDP leader, Jack Layton.

The book, called Jack Layton: Art in Action, is a collaborative effort, edited by Penn Kemp, and with contributions from B.C.-based contributors, Terry Ann Carter, Robert Banks Foster, Heidi Greco, Peter Haase, Joy Kogawa, Sonnet L'Abbé, Franci Louann, Susan McCaslin, Michelle Mungall, Elsie K. Neufeld, J Peachy and Janet Vickers.

The book launch will be held on Sunday, April 7 from 3 to 5 p.m. at the Heritage Grill backroom, at 447 Columbia St. with host, Mickey Bickerstaff, and readings by Kemp, Greco, Louann and McCaslin. There will also be an open mike section.
