Two New Westminster Secondary School students have been selected to sing with an Elektra Women's Choir mentorship program.
The renowned choir's Mira mentorship program gives 12 female high school students from around the Lower Mainland a chance to rehearse with Elektra and join the choir for a portion of a concert.
Sarah Quinn and Stephanie Browning will be among the 12 who take to the stage with Elektra for its Pure Elektra concert on Sunday, March 4.
Students were chosen based on an audition that demonstrated strong musical skills, a minimum of two years of choral experience and a love of choral singing.
Sarah, a soprano in Grade 10, and Stephanie, an alto in Grade 11, both sing with NWSS's senior chamber and jazz choirs.
They'll be singing alongside their own high school choir director, Kelly Proznick, who sings with Elektra.
Not only that, they'll be able to hear the concert on CBC - Pure Elektra, which is the main concert of the choir's 25th anniversary season, is being recorded for national broadcast on CBC radio.
The concert is on Sunday, March 4 at 3 p.m. at Ryerson United Church, 2195 West 45th Ave. in Vancouver. Tickets are $28 adults, $22 students and seniors, and can be purchased at www.elektra.ca.
BLACK HISTORY
World Poetry New Westminster is marking Black History Month on Feb. 22.
The poetry group is joining forces with its partners, the New Westminster Public Library and The Afro News, to celebrate its second tribute to Black History Month and Africa with a special event at the library.
There will be a welcome by Qayqayt First Nation Chief Rhonda Larrabee and a presentation about Black History Month by Roger Blenman.
Lorraine Evens will read the poetry of Maya Angelou, and Sean Bowles will also be a featured poet.
There will be an open mike session dedicated to poems, songs or brief stories dedicated to Black History Month.
It's all hosted by Ariadne Sawyer and Heidi Mueller.
The event is free, and refreshments are provided.

MUSICAL MYSTERY
A Royal City resident is the musical director for a new production onstage at Metro Theatre in Vancouver.
Vashti Fairbairn is providing musical direction for Fighting Chance Productions' The Mystery of Edwin Drood - a musical retelling of Charles Dickens' famous unfinished whodunit.
The production takes a "Choose Your Own Adventure" approach to the story, with the audience getting a chance to decide the outcome of the story every night.
"We're excited to explore as many different outcomes as possible," said director Ryan Mooney. "You can watch our production every night and see a different ending each and every time. It's musical theatre at its most dazzling and organic."
