The local Dragon Diva Operatic Theatre group is giving a classic musical a funky twist.

The much-loved HMS Pinafore will be playing at the Bernie Legge Theatre starting August 19, but it's being done with a 'steampunk' theme.

For those unfamiliar with the term, it's a relatively new genre that puts a new spin on history.

Jeanine Fynn, artistic director with the Dragon Diva, explained to The Record that steampunk is a sub-genre of science fiction. It most often is set in the Victorian era, and often incorporates anachronistic technology or futuristic technologies as Victorians would have envisioned them.

"So, in our production, we have a Mobile Phonograph - MP3 player - for which the Captain claims 'track 5 has gotten me through some tough times.' He also has an Aural Typograph Communications Device - digital recorder - which he uses as a diary to store his innermost thoughts," said Fynn.

The production even has a suitably themed subtitle: The Lass That Loved a Man on a Dirigible.

They're also offering up a chance to win free tickets to the show. The first 10 people to send the correct answer to a trivia question to [email protected] will be entered to win a pair of tickets for opening night.

The trivia question is: In what year was the theatre we're performing in renamed

to be the Bernie Legge Theatre? Fynn notes that a hint to the answer is the organization's blog post on Tuesday, Aug. 9, at www.dragondivaoperatictheatre.blogspot.com/

The show runs Aug. 19 to 28 on Friday, Saturday and Wednesday at 8 p.m., and Sunday at 2 p.m. at the Bernie Legge Theatre.

Tickets are $18 at 604-521-5050 or www.masseytheatre.com.
