New Westminster singers were in the spotlight on the weekend as the Phoenix Chamber Choir took to the stage for two concerts.
The national-award-winning choir, based in Burnaby, opened its season with Path of the Pilgrim, at Shaughnessy Heights United Church in Vancouver on Saturday, Nov. 5 and at Good Shepherd Catholic Church in Surrey on Sunday, Nov. 6.
The concert took its audience on a musical journey through a range of music, including music from 14th-century manuscripts and two medieval pilgrim prayers evocatively set by contemporary British composer Jonathan Dove. Other offerings included The Long Road, by the young Latvian superstar Eriks Esenvalds, plus compositions by Vytautas Miskinis, Knut Nystedt, Brian A. Schmidt and James Whitbourn, along with the world premiere of Miles Ramsay's arrangement of Walk in Jerusalem.
The choir includes New Westminster residents Kevin Mattinson, tenor, and Julie MacLellan, alto, as well as New Westminster music teacher Barbara Paul.
Up next for the choir is A Phoenix Christmas, Dec. 17 at New West Christian Reformed Church and Dec. 18 at Shaughnessy Heights.
