Royal City shines in Jessie Award nominations

The Royal City is well represented in this year's Jessie Award nominations. Nominees for this year's Jessie Richardson Theatre Awards were announced on Tuesday - and New Westminster's Patrick Street productions is among the leading lights.

Nominees for this year's Jessie Richardson Theatre Awards were announced on Tuesday - and New Westminster's Patrick Street productions is among the leading lights.

The company's production of The Light in the Piazza earned six nominations, including Outstanding Production in the Large Theatre category.

For that honour, it's up against Neworld Theatre's The Idiot, Rumble Productions' Snowman and two Arts Club Theatre productions, Next to Normal and The Penelopiad.

Director Peter Jorgensen, a New Westminster resident, is up for Outstanding Direction.

The production also earned nominations in design categories: Alan Brodie for Outstanding Lighting Design, the Royal City's Lance Cardinal for Outstanding Set Design and Jessica Dmytryshyn for Outstanding Costume Design.

The production also earned a nomination in the Significant Artistic Achievement (Large Theatre) category for outstanding music and musical direction, with Evan Bates, Sean Bayntun, Albertina Chan, Kerry O'Donovan, Janna Sailor and Lyndon Surjik earning the nod.

Other New Westminster connections also appear in the nominees' list.

In the Outstanding Performance by an Actor in a Supporting Role category, local resident Richard Newman is up for his appearance in The Merchant of Venice with Bard on the Beach.

Lauren Bowler, co-owner of Great Wall Tea Co. at the River Market, is one of a group nominated for Significant Artistic Achievement (Small Theatre), for outstanding ensemble work in the Firehall Arts Centre musical Chelsea Hotel.

The Jessie Richardson Theatre Awards honour the best in Vancouver's theatre scene.

More than 120 individuals have been nominated in more than 25 categories this year.
