Piazza earns four Jessies

Royal City company takes top honours at annual theatre awards

Where is some of the best theatre in Vancouver coming from?

Why, the Royal City, of course.

New Westminster's own Patrick Street Productions was a multiple winner at Monday night's Jessie Richardson Awards, honouring the best in Vancouver theatre.

The company, run by the husbandand-wife team of Peter Jorgensen and Katey Wright, captured four awards for its production of The Light in the Piazza.

The production, directed by Jorgensen and co-starring Wright, ran at the Norman Rothstein Theatre in Vancouver in September and October 2011.

It snagged the Outstanding Production honours in the large theatre category - beating out Neworld Theatre's The Idiot, Rumble Productions' Snowman and the Arts Club Theatre's Next to Normal and The Penelopiad.

It also won two design awards: Outstanding Lighting Design, for Alan Brodie, and Outstanding Set Design, for New Westminster's own Lance Cardinal.

The production also earned a Jessie for Significant Artistic Achievement, for outstanding music and musical direction - with Evan Bates, Sean Bayntun, Albertina Chan, Kerry O'Donovan, Janna Sailor and Lyndon Surjik earning the honour.
