New Westminster's poet laureate has a new title to add to her resume.

Candice James has been appointed a director of the Federation of British Columbia Writers.

The federation is a not-for-profit organization established in 1976 to contribute to a supportive environment for writing in the province. It's one of the largest writing federations in the country and serves as the voice of writers in B.C.

James is no stranger to the world of writing.

She had her first book of poetry, A Split in the Water, published in 1979. Since then, she's published two more poetry collections, Inner Heart - A Journey (2010) and Bridges and Clouds (2011). Her fourth book, Midnight Embers - A Book of Sonnets, will be launched in February 2012.

James's poems have appeared in numerous international anthologies, magazines, newspapers and e-zines.

She's a member of the League of Canadian Poets and a member of the board for SpoCan, the Canadian Festival of Spoken Word.

She's a featured poet monthly in The Arts and Entertainment Hollywood magazine and the creator of Poetry in the Park, which runs weekly during July and August.

She also founded the Poetic Justice reading series, held Sundays at the Heritage Grill, and Slam Central Spoken Word, held Thursdays at the Heritage Grill.
