The Royal Winnipeg Ballet is putting a decidedly Canadian twist on the classic Russian ballet, The Nutcracker, presented by Ballet B.C. at the Queen Elizabeth Theatre in Vancouver, with New Westminster dancers on stage in various roles.

Morgan Dall performs as a Mountie, Madison Doerksen performs as an angel, Aleksei Lehman performs as a "party boy," and Sydney Turner dances the role of a mouse.

Set at the turn of the 20th century in Canada, this ballet offers a unique take on the timeless Christmas tradition, featuring quintessentially Canadian scenes, such as a hockey game and a battle on Parliament Hill.

The Nutcracker will be held from Dec. 14 to 16, at 7: 30 p.m., with two matinee shows at 2 p.m. on Dec. 15 and 16. Tickets can be purchased through Ticketmaster at 1-855-985-2787 (855-985ARTS) or online at www. ticketmaster.ca and range from $30.25 to $87.75 (not including service charges).

At the cathedral

New Westminster's Holy Trinity Cathedral is hosting its annual Christmas Cheer concert this Sunday, Dec. 16, at 415 Carnarvon St.

The band will play popular Christmas favourites and the choir will sing traditional carols, as well as some newer Christmas music, some of it composed by the cathedral's own music director, George Ryan.

Doors open at 7 p.m. and the show starts at 7: 30 p.m.

Admission is by donation, as a fundraiser for the cathedral's breakfast program for the homeless.
