City looks at future of animal shelter

The City of New Westminster will begin exploring options to relocate and improve its animal control operations.

The City of New Westminster will begin exploring options to relocate and improve its animal control operations.

Jim Lowrie, the city's director of engineering services, said the city will be looking at options for rebuilding or relocating the animal shelter because of the age of the existing building.

He said this process will likely begin in 2012.

"It has to be economically viable," said Mayor Wayne Wright. "We are looking at that one."

Wright said the current animal control shelter on Ewen Avenue in Queensborough is in an area that is seeing a lot of residential development taking place.

He suggested a new location may exist that's located on a less valuable piece of land.

"It's one of those things we have got to explore," he said. "The building has been there a long time. Really, they need a remake."

Wright believes the city could be getting better value out of the Ewen Avenue property if it was being taxed.

He suspects there's another site in Queensborough that may be more suitable for the animal shelter.
