Is there a child in your home who loves to sing? Vivo Children's Choir is accepting new members for the 2011/12 season, and registration is currently underway.

The choir meets Wednesday afternoons at Olivet Baptist Church.

It's a non-auditioned choir for children from Grade 2 on up, with choirs at three levels: Animoso, for grades 2 and 3; Bravura, for grades 4 and 5; and Concento, for grades 6 and up.

At each level, young singers are given a chance to develop their vocal skills and learn the fundamentals of good choral singing.

The choir is led by three artistic directors: Anne Wilson Unger, Carrie Taylor and Ingrid Verseveldt.

The choir is entering its 10th year in New Westminster and is planning a number of special events for the upcoming season - including hosting a B.C. Choral Federation workshop in February and putting on a spring concert that will feature students from the past 10 years being invited to sing with the choir.

BOOKWORMS UNITE

Writers and readers, take note: The New Westminster Public Library is offering some workshops that may be of interest.

On Tuesday, Sept. 20, the library is hosting a Start Your Own Book Club session, offering tips on how to set up and run a club, how to select books and find reviews, author information and discussion questions. The library also has a collection of book club sets to be borrowed.

Then, on Sept. 22, the library is offering a Writing Online workshop - designed for those who want a voice on the web but aren't quite sure how to get their thoughts out there.

"Whatever you want to say, the library staff will show you how to create, post and maintain it," a press release notes.

Space is limited for both workshops, so pre-register by calling 604-527-4667.

The library is at 716 Sixth Ave., uptown.

ART IN THE LIBRARY

Don't worry, art lovers, the library isn't neglecting you, either.

The library is presenting two new group art shows, both underway until the end of September.

In the reference department, you can check out Wax Works: An Exploration in Encaustics, which features work by Shelley Rothenburger and her students Brian Beacham, Dale Costanza, Julie Moore, Lenore Smith, Virginia Rialton, Gail van Kalsbeck, Gillian Wright and Pam Zenkawich.

Encaustic painting, for those unfamiliar with it, is an ancient technique that combines beeswax with oil painting to create a translucent and textured surface.

Over on the ramp gallery, you can see It's All About the Light.

Artists Piroj Amrolia and Zenobia Turnbull use watercolour to explore and capture the light in everyday scenes such as flowers, chickens, water pitchers, and local scenery.

All of the art can be viewed at any time during library opening hours - Monday to Friday from 9: 30 a.m. to 9 p.m., Saturday from 9: 30 a.m. to 5: 30 p.m. and Sunday 1 to 5 p.m.

Pop in to the library at 716 Sixth Ave.
