Whether ballet makes you say "wow" or "meh," you're sure to be entertained by a new documentary film about one of the top dance contests in the world.

First Position, presented by the New West Arts Council as part of Last Monday at the Movies, will be screened at the Massey Theatre at 7: 30 p.m. on Monday, Nov. 26.

The docudrama is directed by Bess Kargman, stars Aran Bell, Michaela Deprince, Joan Sebastian Zamora and Rebecca Houseknecht, and follows these aspiring dancers as they vie for top spots at the prestigious Youth America Grand Prix dance competition.

Bloodied feet, total exhaustion and the inevitable drama of adolescence add up to 90 minutes of riveting true stories about reaching for dreams.

Rotten Tomatoes - the website devoted all things film - gives the flick a 96 per cent "fresh" rating.

Tickets are $9 at the door, 735 Eighth Ave. For more information, visit www.masseytheatre. com or www.artscouncilnew west.org.

Veteran art at city's public library

Carrying on the spirit of Remembrance Day, the New Westminster Public Library is hosting an exhibition called Celebrating the Art of Our Veterans, until the end of November.

The annual group exhibition by veterans of the First World War features original artwork on paper, fabric, canvas and woven material, created within the last year.

As well, the Heritage Life Society has a display of its sketches of some of the residents of the George Derby Centre.

Dale Costanzo, Lavana Labrey, Irene Lacharite and Gillian Wright have used pastel, pencil or watercolour to capture the images of Canada's veterans.

The artwork can be viewed during the library's opening hours at 716 Sixth Ave.
