Mihailo Stefanovic is on his way to the World youth track and field championships.

The New West Spartans athlete broke the B.C. provincial record for youth in the 110-metre hurdles with a new time of 14.21 at the Ocean Athletics Twilight meet on May 23. The result achieved a world youth standard and currently ranks the New Westminster runner No. 1 in Canada.

Spartans teammate Bogdan Pavel also posted a personal-best in the hurdles, breaking the 15second mark with a 14.95 clocking.

Earlier in the month, Stefanovic posted a then wind-aided 14.29 personal best in the hurdle sprint at the Valley Royals Invitational meet in Abbotsford.

The International Amateur Athletics Federation world youth championships will take place in Donetsk, Ukraine from July 10 to 14.

Another New Westminster athlete, Tamara Harris, helped the University of B.C. women's 4x800m relay team win gold at the NAIA outdoor national track and field championships in Marion, Indiana on May 24.

Harris, who transferred to UBC after two years with the Douglas College running club, ran a strong second leg in the women's final, completing her two laps in a fast 2: 12.40 time to give the Thunderbird team a commanding lead.

UBC crossed the finish line in a time of 8: 52.32, more than three seconds ahead of the runner-up Oklahoma Baptist relay team.
