It came down to the ugliest form of decision making in soccer.

The Douglas College women's soccer team saw their provincial championship hopes dashed in penalty kicks last Friday, falling 2-1 to Capilano University in the PacWest semifinal at Burnaby Lake.

The Royals, who finished second overall during the regular season, ahead of Capilano, had the lead in regulation for 50 minutes, after team captain Taylor Wettig opened the scoring at the 16-minute mark, on a set-up from fellow fifth-year vet Alyssa Lum. They held that lead until the 65th minute, when Coquitlam native Brooklynn Doucette tied it up.

Both netminders were kept on their toes during regulation and overtime, as Tess Venables turned aside 11 shots over 120 minutes, while the Caps' Darian Roussy stopped nine.

In penalty kicks, both teams scored on their first three shots before missing in the fourth round. In round 5, the Blues' Julia Peyton tallied what proved to be the difference, as Douglas was stopped on its shot.

Regular season champion Vancouver Island would later trounce Capilano 6-1 in the PacWest final to advance to the Canadian Collegiate Athletic Association championships.
