Dear editor:

I write to draw attention to a global climate strike on Friday, March 15.

I am a Grade 10 student at Sutherland Secondary and for the past few weeks I have been encouraging my friends and peers to participate in this meaningful protest. I was inspired by the actions of Greta Thunberg, a Swedish teenager and activist, who went on strike outside the Swedish parliament building last year and has done so [almost] every Friday since.

This strike is important to me because it shows adults that teenagers, so often dismissed and not taken seriously, have autonomy and integrity and care deeply about the future of their planet. Many, myself included, feel that it is unfair that our generation has to deal with the consequences of many years of pollution and ignorance of global warming.

We are determined to give ourselves the opportunity to live in a world as clean and as safe as our parents and grandparents did.

This Friday, March 15, students all around the world are congregating outside government buildings to demand that we be given a voice and a future. The Vancouver protest will take place outside the Vancouver Art Gallery from 1 to 4 p.m. I am certain that the impact of the student strike will be powerful and lasting.
