The first ever match between two New Westminster senior girls Hyacks soccer teams ended decidedly in favour of Team Black as they Team Orange by a 7-0 score.

The game began cautiously, as classmates and friends sized each other up as competitors, before Team Black Grade 10 forward Georgia Brydon put up the first of her three straight goals.

Graduating player Chloe Nottingham deflected Nicole DelGrosso's shot over Team Orange's keeper to widen the lead.  Jennifer Tamondong, another Grade 12, scored midway through the second half before Grade 9 student Nisa Reehal potted two goals in a span of three minutes.  Emma Machuik, also in Grade 9, earned the shutout - her second in four games.

Team Black head coach Wayne McCarthy summed up his team's general feeling after discussing the outcome with his players.

"We feel badly that the game became so one-sided but the way the standings work, we needed to keep pressing to better our position heading into playoffs,” said McCarthy. “Don't take anything away from team Orange. They battled hard.  We had nothing through the first 20 minutes.”

Turning in strong efforts for Team Orange were seniors Xena Loewen, Tea Canton, Olivia Malcom, Haley Penner and Emma Forgie.

A week earlier, Hyacks’ Team Black suffered its first setback to the season in a 3-1 loss to the Burnaby Central Wildcats.

Brydon counted the team’s lone marker, off a great setup from Reehal.
