New Westminster’s Grace Fetherstonhaugh posted a time of 14:11.1 minutes at the Portland State Rust Buster earlier this month, finishing sixth overall for her school.
The 19-year-old athlete, who is in the second-year of a track and field and cross country scholarship, placed just barely 25 seconds back of third spot, and 39 seconds behind winner and fellow Beavers sophomore Haley Wolf.
A year ago, Fetherstonhaugh made up for lost time after missing the start of the season. She’d place 19th at the Bronco Invitational and compete at the NCAA Regionals, finishing 150th overall. Her performance helped Oregon State qualify for it’s first-ever NCAA championship berth. At the national championship she posted a 22:18.0 time, finishing 244th.
Her good start to the 2019 season is a carry-over from the NCAA track year, where last spring she registered a new school record with her time in the 3000-metre steeplechase – 10:03.13 – at the West regional championships.
Fetherstonhaugh also posted the seventh-best time at the Pac-12 Track and Field championships in the event, while finishing 22nth in the 5000m race.
Oregon State sits sixth in West Region women’s cross country rankings.
