For her first indoor season, New Westminster’s Grace Fetherstonhaugh has raised the bar.

The first-year Oregon State University track and field student-athlete has made the transition from the high school ranks to NCAA Div. 1 without breaking stride, putting up strong times as the season progressed.

At last week’s Husky Classic, Fetherstonhaugh wrapped up the indoor track and field regular season by placing 31st in the women’s one-mile event, with a time that was eighth-best in school history.

She posted a 4:54.94 in the mile, ahead of teammate Haley Wolf, while fellow Oregon runner Mari Friedman led the team with a time of 4:53.84, good for 28th overall.

Fetherstonhaugh’s time was comparable to her outdoor personal best in the 1,500-metre, which she set last October (4:31.38) in Santa Clara, after missing Oregon State’s first meets to start her freshman year.

A week earlier, the Royal City Track and Field Club alum was one of two Beavers to crush the program’s previous best in the indoor 3,000m women’s race at the University of Washington. Fetherstonhaugh completed her 3,000m debut for the team in 9:30.06, carving more than three seconds off the previous school best time. Teammate Juliana Mount would break her own record by finishing in 9:23.36.

The squad will transition to the outdoor NCAA season, beginning with a meet March 16 in Portland.
