One-third of North Shore residents say they are boycotting the Beijing Olympics: poll

Only about half of North Vancouver and West Vancouver residents paying attention.

The 2022 Beijing Winter Olympics are coming to a close. Canada has had some bright moments, including the women's hockey team taking gold, as well as a silver and bronze in women's freeski halfpipe.

But almost half of the North Shore's residents have been tuned out. A third say they are boycotting.

The North Shore News polled 1,233 readers and asked the question: Are you watching the Beijing Winter Olympics?

The poll ran from Feb. 7 to 18 on our website. Of the 1,233 votes, we can determine that 451 are from within the North Shore community. The full results are as follows:

Yes, I'm always here to cheer for Canada's athletes. 34.81% local, 30.82% total    
I had planned to sit this one out, but I am still tuning in. 18.18% local, 15.57% total    
No, I am personally boycotting this Olympics. 33.92% local, 37.47% total

The closing ceremonies are scheduled for Sunday. Due to the time difference, the ceremony will be happening in the middle of the night for local viewers, starting at 3 a.m. Sunday.

Results are based on an online study of adult North Shore News readers who are located in North Vancouver and West Vancouver. The margin of error - which measures sample variability - is +/- 2.78%, 19 times out of 20.
