The folks at the Lower Mainland Green Team kindly provided some statistics about the day’s event:

  • 24 volunteers contributed 70 hours.
  • Volunteers came from New Westminster, Port Moody, Richmond, Surrey, Chilliwack, Burnaby and Vancouver.
  • Twelve of the volunteers had never been to lower Hume Park before.
  • Six volunteers had never planted native plants and trees before.
  • Three volunteers had never removed invasive plants before
  • Volunteers removed 12 cubic meters of ivy and Laurel – about 400 pounds.
  • Volunteers planted 245 native plants and trees such as Big Leaf Maple, Red Osier Dogwood, wild ginger, Salmonberry, Vine Maple, Knick Knick, Oregon Grape, Sword Fern and Deer Fern.

Last year, Evergreen partnered with the city’s parks, culture and recreation department on a two-year parks stewardship program called Uncover Your Creeks: Citizen Science in lower Hume Park. Through the program, volunteers learn about local ecology, help manage invasive plants, plant native plants and monitor water quality in the Brunette River.
