Crowds fill downtown New Westminster to watch the unveiling of the Wait for Me Daddy war memorial in Hyack Square. The monument is based on the photograph taken in the same location by Province newspaper photographer Claude Dettloff on Oct. 1, 1940 and went on to become one of the most famous photographs of the Second World War.

The City of New Westminster reveals that the Anvil Centre civic centre and office tower is projected to be nearly $1.9 million over budget. The city forecasts the project will cost $88.3 million, which exceeds the $86.4 million budget.

The New Westminster School District cuts a cheque for $1 million to make its first instalment on the $4.87 million it owes the province for previous budget shortfalls.

Four candidates put their names forward to run for mayor, 21 for councillor and 13 for school trustee in the Nov. 15 civic election.

A Delta Police officer is charged with second-degree murder after fatally shooting a man involved in a five-hour standoff outside the Starlight Casino on Nov. 8, 2012. The officer was part of the emergency response team deployed to the site to the scene.
