JANUARY 2014

A 32-year-old Surrey man is charged with two counts of first-degree murder in connection to the deaths of Jill Lyons, 45, and Karen Nabors, 48. The women, who lived in the same New Westminster apartment building, were found dead within two weeks of each other in August 2013.

New Westminster sounds alarms that tolls on the Port Mann Bridge have driven traffic to take the free Pattullo Bridge. The city had previously asked the province to lower tolls for heavy trucks on the Port Mann Bridge to discourage the use of the free Pattullo crossing. As part of its bid to get support for a new four-lane tolled replacement for the Pattullo Bridge, council members start visiting city councils in the region to pitch the plan.

Dozens of people are left homeless after a fire guts a three-storey apartment building on Ash Street in the early morning of Jan. 31. Firefighters were able to evacuate all of the building’s residents, but were unable to contain the fire that quickly spread through the wood-frame building. Following the fire, local churches and agencies were flooded with donations to help displaced tenants rebuild their lives. (Feb 5/online)
