The COVID-19 pandemic has meant a lot of businesses in New Westminster have been forced to close their doors, out of health concerns and a lack of customers.

New West resident Nellie Van der Heyden decided to document those closures through a photography project undertaken while walking each day.

Those photos have now been put into a powerful collage that includes notes posted by business owners.

“Only walked a few blocks along Uptown Sixth Street and a few stores in the Royal City Centre Mall, said Van der Heyden. I made a collage from all the pictures.”

Premier John Horgan announced the basic plans for reopening some segments of the New Westminster community, so perhaps some of these closed businesses will start up again soon.
