Vancouver’s international airport says people are welcome smoke weed in its designated smoking areas post-legalization, but the Airport Authority is reminding travellers that crossing international borders with the plant is still not allowed regardless of where you're going.

Consuming recreational pot will become legal in Canada on Oct. 17. In B.C. That means people over 19 will be allowed to carry up to 30 grams of weed with them and bring it on domestic trips within Canada. But travellers are expected to be aware of legislation governing weed in various provinces, the airport warned. For example, you can possess weed at 18 in Alberta but must be 19 in B.C.

As for getting high to take the edge of flying, YVR says it’s fine if you smoke pot in one of the airport’s designated outdoor smoking areas.

“If you wish to consume cannabis at YVR, smoking and vaping is permitted outside the terminal building in clearly marked areas. We will continue to provide a smoke- and vape-free environment inside our airport,” read a news release from the airport.

Although people will be allowed to carry weed on domestic flights, YVR reminded passengers that it’s still forbidden to carry cannabis across international borders even if weed is legal in your destination.
