A Fortis B.C. spokesperson stated that a three-quarter inch gas line was hit at 898 Carnarvon St.

"Carnarvon Street was closed between 10th and Blackie," said Neal Pobran, a corporate communications advisor with Fortis B.C. "It is under control."

Blair Fryer, the City of New Westminster's communications manager, said New Westminster Fire and Rescue Services evacuated the Plaza 88 residential and commercial development as a precautionary measure.

"New Westminster Fire responded and contacted Fortis B.C. Fortis B.C. responded and repaired the gas leak," he said.

Transit services to the New Westminster SkyTrain were temporarily delayed as trains and buses couldn't access the station.
