Royal City residents dove right into the fun at Canada Games Pool’s birthday party.

About 1,300 people had a swimmingly good time at the 40th anniversary celebration for Canada Games Pool. The event featured activities in the pool, on the deck and in the lobby.

“It was great,” said Coun. Bill Harper. “Everybody seemed to have a fantastic time. It was wall to wall in the pool.”

A rope swing, mat walk, giant whirlpool and bubbles were some of the in-pool activities, while on-deck fun featured face painting, a balloon artist, tattoos, colouring and goodie bags. Entertainment including a diving demonstration, breakdancers and a slide show about the facility’s history.

Members of city council helped blow out the candles on the four- by eight-foot birthday cake, and give out birthday cake from Cloud 9 specialty bakery and cupcakes from Pink Ribbon Bakery.

Coun. Jonathan Cote said he didn’t know if partygoers would be able to finish off the sweets, but within 45 minutes there wasn’t a trace of the treats.

The 40-year-old facility was home to aquatics events when New Westminster and Burnaby co-hosted the 1973 Canada Summer Games.
