New Westminster police have arrested the rifle-toting man who triggered a manhunt in Sapperton Tuesday night.

The man was spotted at about 10:20 p.m. on Oct. 9 carrying a rifle near the Sapperton SkyTrain station. Police were called to investigate, and nearby businesses, including Royal Columbian Hospital, were put on lockdown while officers conducted a search of the area.

But the man evaded police.

On Wednesday, however, at about 11:55 p.m., they arrested a New Westminster resident for firearm offences, according to a police press release.

“A report of this nature is something we take very seriously. We devoted numerous resources during the initial call for service, and for the investigation that followed,” Sgt. Jeff Scott said in the release. “There is no public safety concern at this time, as we have the male in custody who is alleged to have been carrying the firearm. We are thankful for this safe outcome, and our investigation is on-going.”

The man remains in custody at this time, and no charges have been laid.
