A New Westminster man is recovering after being shot by someone allegedly trying to break into the man’s vehicle early Monday morning.
The New Westminster Police Department responded to a 911 call at around 2 a.m. to assist someone who had allegedly been assaulted with a weapon.
Upon arrival, officers found the victim but not the shooting and officers conducted a search, police said.
“The Lower Mainland Integrated Police Dog Service assisted and the suspect was located a short distance away and arrested without incident,” said a news release. “A BB gun and stolen property were found on the suspect during the arrest.”
Prior to the 911 call, the suspect allegedly broke into a vehicle and was confronted by the owner of the vehicle when the owner recognized the suspect in possession of his property, police said.
“To have what appears to be a gun pointed at you and then fired is a terrifying experience,” stated Sgt. Jeff Scott. “Thankfully, this was a BB gun and didn’t cause life-threatening injury, but is a very serious offense.”
A Report to Crown Counsel has been submitted recommending the following charges in relation to this incident:
Two (2) counts of assault with a weapon contrary to section 267
One count of possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose contrary to section 88
One count of use of imitation firearm contrary to section 85
One count of theft under contrary to section 334(b)
