The New West Progressives political party has started a fundraiser to provide support for the Greater Vancouver Food Bank, which operates a hub in New Westminster.

Between now and June 30, the party will match every contribution made up to a maximum of $1,000.

“That means if we collect $1000 through this online campaign, a minimum of $2000 will be donated to the food bank to help New Westminster families who have been impacted by COVID-19,” read a news release.

“We're asking you to support the Food Bank by participating in our Virtual Food Drive. Just click here or on the link below to have a virtual shopping experience that lets you select healthy, nutritious foods for Food Bank clients.”

The food bank told the Record it is in dire need of more donations to meet increasing demand due to job losses related to COVID-19.

“A lot of people have lost their jobs. A lot of people are scared and concerned. They have bills to pay. We are seeing approximately 65 new clients to the food bank … on a daily basis now. That’s a big increase for us,” said David Long, CEO of the Greater Vancouver Food Bank. “We want them to know they’ll get food when they visit us, and it’s a respectful and safe environment.”
