Herbert Spencer Elementary School will be receiving the bulk of the New Westminster School District's planned capital spending in the coming fiscal year.

More than $1.1 million is planned in capital spending in the school district for 2019/20, with Herbert Spencer receiving more than $470,000, about 41 per cent of the investment. The vast majority of its upgrades will be going into its mechanical system.

Over $426,000 is planned for the school’s boiler, heat coils and hot water system, according to a report to the school board’s operations committee.

Beyond that, just two more line items involve six-figure investments — Lord Kelvin Elementary is getting a $150,000 upgrade to its boiler and HVAC system and Glenbrook Middle is getting a similarly priced upgrade to its mechanical system.

The remainder of the 32 items to receive capital funding, coming from the Ministry of Education’s annual facility grant, are largely smaller ticket items, such as alarm replacements for several schools, cement paving and fire safety plan updates for a number of schools.

New Westminster Secondary School will also receive a $66,000 asbestos abatement and the school board office will get a $45,000 investment to widen its parking lot.
