A Takla man is being commended for his bravery during the arrest of an armed individual earlier this year.

On Jan. 29, Shane West helped members of the Takla Landing RCMP detachment, who responded to a call for assistance near a local school where a man was discharging a rifle.

Upon arrival, officers tried to speak with the man in commanding him to put the rifle down, but he did not comply, and in turn, requested that police shoot him.

That’s when West stepped in.

He slowly approached the man, eventually convincing him to put the rifle down.

Once the individual complied with the direction, West separated him from the firearm.

“Mr. West’s courage in assisting our members in the apprehension of an armed individual aided in bringing this situation to a successful conclusion,” said RCMP Deputy Commissioner Jennifer Strachan in a news release this morning (March 16).

“His actions and dedication to duty bring credit to himself and are in keeping with the highest standards of a Canadian citizen.”

When the man was securely away from the firearm, detachment members apprehended him without incident.
