Seriously-injured Golden Ears hiker rescued with help of Coquitlam SAR

Regional volunteers were called to the provincial park the night of Aug. 10, 2021, to help the Ridge Meadows branch find an individual that fell 30 metres on Evan's Peak.

Coquitlam Search and Rescue (CoqSAR) is reminding residents to be aware of your surroundings, especially when walking or hiking near steep cliffs, hillsides or mountains.

On Tuesday night (Aug. 10) around 5 p.m., the regional volunteer group was called to help its Ridge Meadows counterpart rescue a hiker with reportedly serious injuries after falling 30 metres in Golden Ears Provincial Park.

According to CoqSAR, the incident happened at Evan's Peak — a popular summer hiking site for Lower Mainlanders but also a hot spot for SAR crews looking for missing or injured individuals.

In a social media post this morning (Aug. 11), Ridge Meadows SAR explained the hiker was rescued before 8 p.m., stabilized and evacuated by BC Emergency Health Services (BCEHS).

"Evans Peak has proven popular with hikers over the last few years but has generated a lot of injuries requiring rescue, similar to this one, where hikers fall near 1100m on the trail," added CoqSAR. "Please take care on the Evans Peak Trail."

Two other hikers were with the rescued individual, but were transported out of the park safely with no reported injuries.

A Coquitlam helicopter emergency crew was also flown in to extract the hiker with long lines.

Ridge Meadows SAR said this is the second known hiker to take a bad fall in the exact same location of Evan's Peak this month, but the first person was able to walk away from the fall.
