Multicultural society calling for artists to help create Coquitlam exhibit

"Your Art Your Reflections," a showcase and contest by the Asian Impact Society, hopes to continue to build an inclusive community post pandemic.

The Asian Impact Society is a non-profit volunteer group in the Tri-Cities that allows people to share their experiences in hopes of combatting racial injustice.

A Port Moody-based organization is mounting a display of multicultural artwork in Coquitlam this fall, but it needs local artists to help piece it together.

The Asian Impact Society (AIS) has scheduled an exhibit and contest at Place Des Arts (1120 Brunette Ave.) starting in September with the hopes of creating a "stronger, more inclusive community" post pandemic.

Racism reports increased across Canada significantly when the COVID-19 pandemic was declared, specifically towards the Asian community as the virus originated in China.

The upcoming art exhibit is the latest project by AIS as part of the non-profit's commitment to address any and all forms of discrimination in the Tri-Cities.

"We are thrilled to present this exhibit and contest as we believe it is important to promote cultural diversity and combat racism in our community," said Justina Mark, AIS spokesperson, in a news release.

"We hope this exhibit will encourage visitors to celebrate the beauty of different cultures and inspire them to take action against discrimination and build stronger communities."

Entitled Your Art Your Reflections: Multiculturalism, Diversity and AntiRacism, AIS received a $15,000 Spirit of Coquitlam grant in December 2022 to help make the exhibit possible.

Now, it's calling on artists of all ages to contribute to the project by submitting a piece of artwork using one of its titled themes, including paintings, sculptures, photographs and other mediums.

After the exhibit, which will be featured in-person and online for public viewing, a panel of judges will hand out cash awards and recognition to the winners of the contest portion.

Art entries are free, and the deadline to submit artwork to AIS was recently extended to June 8. Residents interested in judging the contest can apply by May 21.

Your Art Your Reflections is slated to be displayed at Place Des Arts from Sept. 8 to Nov. 9, 2023.
