Man arrested from serious Port Coquitlam hit-and-run involving motorcyclist

Potential charges are being reviewed for a Port Moody resident as the driver of a van that hit a motorcyclist and drove away on July 28, 2021.

Police have made an arrest in its investigation of a serious Port Coquitlam hit-and-run earlier this summer.

Coquitlam RCMP is sending a review to the BC Prosecution Service of appropriate charges against a 49-year-old Port Moody man as the driver of a van that collided with a motorcyclist and took off the night of July 28, 2021.

Witnesses told Mounties the incident took place around 8:20 p.m. at the intersection of Westminister Avenue and Oxford Street, one block north of Lougheed Highway, claiming a dark-coloured GMC van drove away immediately and was seen driving eastbound on Prairie Avenue.

The motorcyclist was taken to hospital after first responders arrived on the scene, but was expected to make a full recovery according to RCMP.

Investigators then released images of the van to the public, reviewed dash-cam footage, obtained search warrants and conducted vehicle examinations.

One man was eventually found and arrested on the following offences:

  • Fail to stop after an accident causing bodily harm, contrary to section 320.16(2) Criminal Code
  • Dangerous operation of a conveyance, contrary to section 320.13(1) Criminal Code

Police would like to thank the media and the public for playing an important role in helping us advance this investigation, said spokesperson Const. Deanna Law in a news release today (Sept. 2).

Tips from the public helped us identify the suspect and bring forward additional witnesses.
