A driver has lost their Ferrari for seven days after Port Moody police caught them speeding nearly triple the posted 50 km/h limit on the Barnet Highway on July 12, 2022.

Ferrari is known for its dedication to racing greatness, but one local commuter took it a turn too far.

Traffic officers with Port Moody police (PMPD) pulled a souped-up sports car of the same brand off the Barnet Highway on Tuesday (July 12) after clocking the driver at 134 km/h.

That was 84 km above, or 168 per cent faster than, the posted speed limit of 50 km/h.

In a social media post, the PMPD explain the Ferrari was spotted near Barnet's intersection with Clarke Street — one block north of where St Johns Street becomes Clarke Road.

As a result, the speedster has their vehicle impounded for seven days and was issued an excessive speeding ticket. Fines for such an offence can range from $368 to $483.

The incident took place in broad daylight of Tuesday afternoon for all to see who passed by.

It also happened a few days after PMPD encouraged the public to slow down and follow the rules of the road during its first CounterAttack weekend of the summer.

On Friday (July 8), police pulled two alcohol-impaired drivers off the road, including one that received a 90-day licence suspension, and both vehicles were also impounded.

As well, multiple 'N' drivers at various Port Moody locations were caught breaking laws under the Motor Vehicle Act.

Among them included disobeying the class 7N licence's restrictions, such as having more than the allotted number of non-family members inside a vehicle.

"Port Moody residents can expect to see more counterattack roadblocks throughout the summer months and beyond," adds PMPD spokesperson Const. Sam Zacharias in a statement to the Tri-City News.

"On average, impaired driving kills about 65 British Columbians annually with nearly a third of deaths occurring in the summer. These deaths are so avoidable and we always encourage the public to plan a safe ride home – take transit, taxi or a rideshare."

In the case of the Ferrari, the result of its overly-excessive speed could have ended in a potentially fatal situation.

According to ICBC latest stats available, 70 crashes took place on the Barnet Highway near its Clarke Street intersection between 2017 and 2021.

And that included 20 casualties in that span.

This section of Barnet currently has a southbound right turn lane onto Clarke Street, and those travelling west on the road are forced to turn right onto the highway.
