New cases of COVID-19 skyrocketed in Burnaby in November, partially due to a massive outbreak at Burnaby Hospital.

The latest data from the BC Centre for Disease Control shows Burnaby had 1,081 COVID-19 cases in November.

That’s a huge jump from the 287 cases Burnaby had in all of October and 238 cases in September.

According to the BCCDC, Burnaby has now seen 1,938 COVID-19 cases between Jan. 1 and Nov. 30, 2020.

Burnaby has seen multiple cases in its local schools, including at least 10 notifications at Burnaby North Secondary.

But COVID-19 outbreak at Burnaby Hospital, which has now been declared over, was the biggest location for cases.

The outbreak began on Nov. 9 after evidence of transmission in a medicine unit. There were at least 60 patients and 43 staff associated with the COVID-19 outbreak at the hospital, said Fraser Health, as well as 10 deaths.

B.C. set a grim new record Dec. 10, with 28 new COVID-19-related deaths in the past 24 hours, bringing the total number of deaths from the virus in the province to 587.

"All but two of these people were elders or seniors, who were in long-term care homes in various places across B.C.," provincial health officer Bonnie Henry told media.

The rising number of deaths has followed a rise in the number of people actively infected with the virus, which now stands at a record 9,524. The vast majority of those people are self-isolating at home, although 346 are in hospital, including a record 83 people in intensive care units.

More than 72%, or 28,948 of the 40,060 people who have contracted the virus since it first appeared in the province in late January, have recovered.
