Deer Lake Park will host the Vancouver Opera in the first Opera in the Park event on July 17.

The Vancouver Opera is hosting its inaugural, free Opera in the Park event at Deer Lake on Sunday, July 17.

The opera will play popular selections from movies and television including The Godfather, The Simpsons and Mission Impossible, led by conductor and music director emeritus Jonathan Darlington and chorus director Tina Chang.

The event features the Vancouver Opera orchestra, chorus and principal singers.

The festivities will start at 1 p.m. with family-friendly activities such as an “instrument petting zoo,” balloon twisters, face painting, a photo wall and stilt walkers.

The concert begins at 7:30 p.m.

Outside food is permitted and food trucks will be on-site. Arrive early as parking is limited and bring your blankets and lawn chairs – but leave the large tents and umbrellas at home.

Opera in the Park follows the 33rd annual Symphony in the Park event performed by the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra on Saturday, July 16.
