The SFU Choir couldn’t hold a concert this holiday season – so they’re doing some virtual carolling instead.

The choir is offering a first-ever digital carolling video service, in which patrons can purchase the gift of a video carolling performance to send to family and friends. The initiative will raise money to help the choir continue its operations in the face of the COVID-19 pandemic.

“One of the best parts of being in choir is getting to create something with other people,” said Toria Kindersley, the choir’s fundraising coordinator, in a press release. “With no concert this semester, we still wanted to give members a chance to collaborate on a project. I am amazed and grateful for each singer that signed up. They’re often finding time in between work, assignments and finals to come and sing with us.”

Gift-givers can use the link at https://sfu-choir.square.site/product/product/13 to purchase a performance of one of six holiday classics: We Wish You a Merry Christmas, Deck The Halls, O Come All Ye Faithful, Angels We Have Heard on High, Silent Night and Hark the Herald Angels Sing.

For $12, buyers get a video file of choristers singing the selected song, with a personalized message read out at the beginning.

If you want to arrange a little something extra – multiple songs, a longer message, specific décor or any other customizations – send an email to bookings@sfuchoir.ca, and the choir will do its best to accommodate you, subject to availability.

The SFU Choir, founded in 1992, is a non-profit group that includes university students, staff and faculty as well as community members. Rehearsals take place on Zoom every Thursday from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m., with social games and trivia afterwards.
