Rotary Ride for Rescue invites cyclists to climb Cypress over next month

Annual fundraiser in support of North Shore Rescue was cancelled last year due to COVID-19

A major fundraising event in support of North Shore Rescue is taking place over the next month after a one-year COVID hiatus.

The 10th Rotary Ride for Rescue campaign is on now until June 12 with all proceeds earmarked to support the local search and rescue crew.

While past years saw hundreds of participants sign up for a demanding single-day bike ride up to the Cypress Mountain resort area – beginning at the junction of Cypress Bowl Road and Cypress Lane and finishing at the mountain lodge – this year’s event has been designed to look a little different.

Anytime until June 12, bikers are encouraged to register as an individual or a team, set a fundraising goal and collect pledges, and do their own individual rides up Cypress over the next month. Riders will be invited to submit their recorded times as well.

Another option is a virtual ride taking place at 9 a.m. on June 12 which is designed to simulate the Cypress hill climb. Participants in the virtual ride are still encouraged to collect pledges but will do the ride using a trainer or stationary bike from the comfort of home.

The annual ride is organized by the Rotary Club of West Vancouver Sunrise. The fundraising goal this year is $60,000.

Like many charitable campaigns last year, the 2020 ride was suspended due to the pandemic.
