Looking for something to do today/tonight? Well, here’s some ideas for the taking (or not, your choice). Check out our top 10 list of things to do this Wednesday. Meteorologists are calling for a 90 per cent chance of rain, so you’ll need to pack an umbrella for the outdoor activities. Nonetheless, rain or shine here are some fun ideas to make it over the weekday hump.
1. Head to the library and pick up a book, then take the book to Old Crow Coffee and hunker down for some quiet reading. Staff at the New Westminster Public Library suggest Just Kids, a memoir by rocker Patti Smith about life in New York City. The library is open 9:30 a.m. to 9 p.m. today, and Old Crow Coffee is open until 6 p.m.
2. Drop by the Vancouver Circus School for an evening of juggling and unicycling! For a $10 drop-in fee you can spend part of the evening learning to juggle or ride a unicycle. No experience necessary, and the drop-in class is open to anyone 10 years and older. For more info, check out www.vancouvercircusschool.ca.
3. Stop by the Anvil Centre to check out the latest art exhibit hanging in the centre’s community art space. The exhibit, titled Faces and Places, features works by local artists, including Richard Armstrong, Mollie Chau, Brenda Fairfax, Susan L. Greig, Margaret Halsey and many more. Anvil Centre is open between 10 a.m. and 5 p.m., and you’ll find the community art space on the third floor, near the entrance to the theatre.
4. While you’re at Anvil Centre, why not pop in to the New Westminster Museum and Archives to see the latest exhibition – Our Working Waterfront, 1945-2015. The exhibition is a project four years in the making. Simon Fraser University along with the New Westminster Museum and Archives, longshore pensioners ILWU Local 502 and New Westminster teachers gathered history and stories about life and work on the river for this exhibition. Anvil Centre is open between 10 a.m. and 5 p.m., and entry to the museum is completely free.
5. Seriously, you could just spend the whole day at Anvil Centre. After the museum, take a peek at 5600K Temperature of White at the New Media Art Gallery. This exhibition marks the end of summer and explores light and human perception. Don’t forget to check out Gunda Förster’s installation Circle, which is a spellbinding light that circles on a pendulum, creating “moments and places of uncanny theatre.” The New Media gallery is open Wednesday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.
6. Take a dip at Canada Games Pool for free thanks to the folks over at Westminster Savings. Swimmers of all ages can stop by the pool between 2:30 and 4:30 p.m. to enjoy a free swim. Canada Games Pool is at 65 East Sixth Ave.
7. Not afraid of a little rain? Head over to the Moody Park Outdoor Pool for the public swim from 1:30 to 7:55 p.m. (Hume Park Outdoor Pool has the same public swim time.) And for the tween crowd there’s a youth-only swim from 8 to 9:25 p.m. Don’t forget to bring your GO Card to get in. For admission prices, call 604-526-4281 or visit www.newwestpcr.ca. Moody Park Outdoor Pool is at 10th Street and Seventh Avenue.
8. For the 19+ crowd, why not check out one of New West’s watering holes? The Paddlewheeler Pub, 810 Quayside Dr., serves up 35 cent wings on Wednesdays from 4 to 11 p.m. Uptown at Union Jack Public House, at 525 Seventh St., pours 20 ounce pints of Rickard’s White for $5 and all desserts are $2 off. Downtown at Judge Begbie’s Tavern, 609 Columbia St., you can get a Moonshine Margarita for $6 and all appies are half off. (And this is only a small selection of pubs in the city!)
9. If you’re looking to indulge in some extra-tasty beer, check out New West’s own local brewery Steel & Oak. Wednesday night is #SOVINYL night, which means guests choose the music in the tasting room. Choose from a hefty collection available at the tasting room (1319 Third Ave.) or bring your own vinyl to play. The tasting room is open noon to 8 p.m. on Wednesdays.
10. Watch a movie at Landmark Cinemas at Plaza 88. There’s a whole bunch of movies playing at the theatre, including Straight Outta Compton, No Escape and The Man From U.N.C.L.E. For the kidlets, Shaun the Sheep might be more their style. Plus, this week only all movies are Tuesday prices. Yahoo! For times and more info, visit www.landmarkcinemas.com.
