A New Westminster man is in the running for the title of Canada’s best comedian in the SiriusXM Top Comic competition.

Dave Harris earned a spot in the semifinals after a competition that start this May, when SiriusXM selected 60 comics to audition in front of a panel of industry judges. Six nights of comedy, with three comics selected each night, resulted in 18 semifinalists who are now going head-to-head online to move into the finals.

Harris is a co-host of the podcast acting out and the YouTube series beer me. He also co-produces the weekly comedy show 8 ½ inches of comedy and The Comic Strip at the Penthouse.

He and the other semifinalists can be found at siriusxm.ca/topcomic, and the competition is open until Aug. 17.

The six comics with the most votes will move on as finalists, along with two additional comics chosen by a panel of industry judges. The eight finalists will then compete live at the Queen Elizabeth Theatre in Toronto on Sept. 27.

“It’s no secret that Canada is home to some of the world’s funniest people, which made it a real challenge to pick just 18 from our recent auditions,” said Ben Miner, Canadian comic and host of SiriusXM’s Canada Laughs. “We’re excited to continue to shine a light on our incredible homegrown comedic talent and let the country have a hand in choosing our finalists from this hilarious group.”

New Westminster has a reputation to uphold in the competition: last year’s winner, Gavin Matts, was from right here in New West.

Harris is now vying for a New Westminster repeat as he pits his talents against Tim Nutt of Vancouver, Ryan Williams of Kamloops, Shirley Whalen of Fort McMurray, Brittany Lyseng of Calgary, Myles Morrison of Saskatoon, Chanty Marostica of Winnipeg, and a passel of Ontarians: Kyle Brownrigg, Roman Mancini and Sophie Buddle of Ottawa; Cara Connors, Gilson Lubin, Efthimios Nasiopoulos and Keith Pedro of Toronto; Mark DeBonis and Nick Reynoldson of Scarborough; Alex Pavone of Woodbridge and Ashley Moffatt of Hamilton.

You can vote for your favourite comic once a day, so get in there and start voting.
