New West art exhibition explores the immigrant experience

Three artists' stories take shape in Three Echoes: Hope and Transformation at Amelia Douglas Gallery, Jan. 16 to Feb. 29

Explore the immigrant experience through art in the next exhibition at Amelia Douglas Gallery.

Three Echoes: Hope and Transformation is on at the gallery at Douglas College from Jan. 16 to Feb. 29.

An opening reception is set for Thursday, Jan. 16 from 4:30 to 7:30 p.m., with an artists’ talk at 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 21.

The exhibition highlights the work of three artists who are also friends: Sidi Schaffer, Sorour Abdollahi and Devora. It examines the shared “echo” of their outlook on life, art and the immigrant experience, despite their contrasting cultural origins.

Schaffer, who’s from Romania, uses a collection of dried flowers and leaves for her paintings and collages, which are inspired by her love and respect for nature, as well as drawing inspiration from the spiritual world.

Adollahi, who’s from Iran, creates abstract paintings that include depictions of ancient Persian culture, ruins and architecture. She describes her work as “the mediation between the modern and the ancient, the old and the new, the West and the East.”

Devora is from California. Her abstract paintings and collages include flowing colours and whimsical forms. She describes her work as dreams and stories that touch the inner world of emotion through the use of symbols and metaphors.

“This group exhibit is a story of fluidity and change through an evolutional journey, bridged by memories of their past, embracing of cultural diversities, and the relationship built between them,” said Krista Graham, Douglas College arts events officer, in a press release. “It’s a story that stirs one to reflect on their own journey and look towards the future with a sense of bravery and excitement for what might come next.”

Amelia Douglas Gallery is on the fourth floor at Douglas College’s New Westminster campus, 700 Royal Ave. It’s open Mondays through Fridays from 10 a.m. to 7:30 p.m., and Saturdays from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.
