Local audiences will soon have a chance to enjoy an “uncommon conversation between guitar and percussion.”

The Up Close Recital Society series is returning on Wednesday, Oct. 10 at 7 p.m. with a performance by Itamar Erez and Hamin Honari.

The two internationally touring musicians, originally from Iran and Israel, met in Vancouver and now use their performances to bring together the traditional sounds of the Middle East with their own original music. Recent shows for the duet include the Tiny Lights Festival, the Harrison Festival for the Arts, the Vancouver International Jazz Festival and the Islands Folk Festival.

“Itamar’s music holds a depth and sensitivity that touches listeners deeply,” says a press release. “It blends the delicateness of Middle Eastern music, the freedom found in jazz and the passion of flamenco, creating a unique sound all his own.”

Erez is currently on the guitar faculty at the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra School of Music.

Honari, meanwhile, plays a variety of Persian hand drums and has toured as a member of the Dastan Ensemble, one of Iran’s most well-known Persian classical music groups.

Their duet concert is set for Centennial Lodge in Queen’s Park. For tickets, see itamarerez.brownpapertickets.com.
