Poetry, music and art are meeting in Queen’s Park as a local poet releases her new book.

Donna Ross is launching her new book, Disaster Response Route, in an evening that’s being dubbed A Conversation About Poetry. It’s on Wednesday, Feb. 13 at 7 p.m. at The Gallery at Queen’s Park.

The poetry collection, published by local literary press Silver Bow Publishing, is Ross’s fourth. It explores disaster response as both a creative act and an expression of the resilience of the human spirit in the face of adversity, a press release says.

Ross will discuss her work and some of the writers and influences that have helped shape it, and she’ll also read from the work of a diverse range of poets, emphasizing the role of the personal canon in developing a relationship to poetry.

“More than any other art form, poetry is a truly subjective journey,” Ross said in the release. “It’s reflective of one’s observations, experiences and outlook.”

Candace James, poet laureate emerita of the City of New Westminster, described Ross’s new book as a “breath of fresh air.”

"These poems rub the soul with a tender salve that soothes the ragged edges of a time worn heart,” James said.

The evening will also feature music by local guitarist Enrico Renz.

It’s free. You can register ahead and find more information at Eventbrite.
