It’s just past 8 p.m. and the polls have closed in New Westminster – now the waiting begins.

Once the advanced polls and special polls results are counted, counts from today’s 16 polling stations will start to be released. By the end of the night, we should know who will be New Westminster’s next mayor and six councilors  – barring any close races requiring a recount.

To recap, here’s who is in the running:

  • Mayor: Jimmie Bell; Nikki Binns; Jonathan Cote (incumbent); and Harm Woldring.
  • * Councillor: Chinu Das; Daniel Fontaine; Troy Hunter; Mike Ireland; Patrick Johnstone; Jaimie McEvoy; Paul McNamara; Nadine Nakagawa; Benny Ogden; Chuck Puchmayr; Angela Sealy; Mary Trentadue; Ellen Vaillancourt; and Bryn Ward.

For the past four years, all members of New Westminster city council were part of a slate endorsed by the New Westminster and District Lour Council. Now running as Team Cote, the group, comprised of Cote, Das, Johnstone, McEvoy, Nakagawa and Puchmayr, are going up against four independents (Hunters, Ireland, Ogden and Sealy).

The New West Progressives, which formed a year ago to run candidates to bring new voices and perspectives to council than those of the labour-endorsed slate. Running for the New West Progressives are Fontaine, McNamara, Vaillancourt and Ward.
